What is a domain?

Guide for beginners

To simplify the matter we can state that the domain is a name of your website e.g. active24.cz. It points to a space on the server where your data, you want to display, are stored.

In detail it is a text representation of the IP address, that the user is using to display your website. For a person it is much easier to remember the name active24.cz than 37.9.169.171. Information about which IP is set are stored on the DNS (Domain Name System) servers.

Domain levels

We differentiate between several levels of domains. They are separated by a dot. from each other. The highest level are the Top Level Domains or TLD. They can be generic (gTLD – .com, .edu, .org, …) or national (.cz, .sk, .pl, .eu, …).

On the lower level there are second level domains. They are what most people imagine as a domain – e.g. websupport.sk, or google.com. The second level domains are in the care of national registry called NIC (network information center). For example it is CZ-NIC in Czech Republic or SK-NIC in Slovakia.

Lowest standing have third level domains or subdomains e.g. admin.active24.cz or apps.google.com. Their creation and management is fully in the owner’s (or administrator’s) hands.

Types of domains

Domains are also divided by their type. There are two types – generic (.com, .org, .net, etc.) and national (.cz, .sk, .pl, .eu, etc.).

Registration of a new domain

Start by makin the order, everything else is done from our part. You do not require to have a CIN (IČO) – domain and webhosting is available for you no matter if you are a natural or a juridical person. After the order is complete you will receive an e-mail with the next steps. If you would have any problems during the order, contact us. We will gladly help you or eventually we can create the order for you.

From the point of view of a webhosting company a hosting and a domain are two separate things. Domain is de facto a website name while hosting is a space a storage on the server where the website itself is located. Even though these two services are usually ordered together, it is not mandatory.

The ordering process usually consists of these three steps:

  • domain registration
  • placing order for a hosting
  • payment of the invoice

The purchase of a domain is easy. If you have thought about the name, simply visit the verifier on our website and find out if your domain name is available. If so, register it before someone else does. It is mostly for the attractive words (like accommodation, travel, sales) that the domain may already be taken. After this step you need to think about the hosting.

Expedience of the order

The whole ordering process including the payment of the invoice is a matter of several minutes. Domains .CZ are registered immediately after receiving payment, foreign domains are registered within up to 5 days after payment (in most cases it is almost immediate). Domains are fully functional within 24 hours (usually earlier) after the registration is complete at the national registry.

If you purchase domain along with a hosting, the access to the server is available immediately after the order is complete, so you can use it even before you pay the invoice.
