E-mail protocols

Are you not sure whether to use POP3 or IMAP? What is SMTP? Lets learn more about differences between these protocols so you can decide, which one is right for you.

Protocols POP3, IMAP and SMTP serves for communication with the mail server (by sending and receiving e-mails). To connect to mail server an e-mail client is used (most popular are Outlook and Thunderbird). Encrypted versions are pop3.websupport.cz, imap.websupport.cz and smtp.websupport.cz. (protected by SSL or TLS encryption).

POP3 and how to use it

POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) download messages from the server which means that after the e-mail is opened in one device it is not possible to open it on another device. This protocol is suited for user with less often or unstable internet connection. After the messages are downloaded they can be accessed and read offline. A disadvantage is that after the download to the client the messages are deleted from the server. POP3 works on these ports:

IMAP and how to use it

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is better and recommended option for you can access your e-mails on multiple devices. E-mails are not downloaded to the device and thus are not deleted from the server and are available for other devices. IMAP protocol can also send information about the status of the message. For example if you reply to a message in Outlook, the message will contain information that it has been replied even if you check your e-mails trough Webmail. The same way messages read in Webmail will be marked as read in Outlook. Ports are:

SMTP and how to use it

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) purpose is on the contrary to previous protocols to send e-mails and make sure that they are received to the recipient’s mailbox, where can be accessed by the user e.g. via POP3 or IMAP.
