NS records (nameservers)

NS records, also called nameservers, determines where are your DNS records located. Editing of NS records is administered at the national registry (WHOIS) of the domain, who knows, where to send all inquiries about your domain. NS records are superior to all other DNS records.

How is A record represented

@ 86400 IN NS ns1.websupport.cz.
@ 86400 IN NS ns2.websupport.cz.
@ 86400 IN NS ns3.websupport.eu.
  • Symbol @ represents that this setting is for the main domain.
  • TTL 86400 defines for how long the internet provider’s servers can remember this DNS setting. The time is in seconds.
  • IN NS stands for type of record – NS means it is a NS record.
  • Last parameter is address of the nameserver.

Editing NS records

1. Log in to the WebAdmin
2. Select your Domain in the Services tab
3. Select DNS settings in the left menu, submenu will roll out and there select the Nameservers

In this section you can see your existing DNS records. You can select to use Active24 default nameservers or enter custom nameservers.

NS records can also be changed for individual subdomains.

If you change our NS records to nameservers of different provider, you will lose the option to manage other DNS records – like A, MX,  CNAME or TXT records – in our administration.

Edit NS record form

If you wish to set Active24 DNS servers select Use Default WebSupport NS option or enter records: ns1.websupport.cz, ns2.websupport.cza ns3.websupport.eu. If you wish to use different DNS servers, select Custom NS and enter your own nameservers to fields NS 1 – NS 4.

Changing the location of DNS records will be processed and updated at the registry in 24 to 48 hours.

In case of using NS record of different provider we recommend to delete DNSSEC record in our administration and ask new provider to generate new record. This record will have to be set up in our administration.

In case of changing from external providers’ NS records to ours we also recommend to delete external DNSSEC record in our administration.

Examples

Changing NS to provider Wix

Domain mydomain.com is designated to use NS records of Wix. In this case domain mydomain.com will display content located at the Wix service. Record will look like.

@ 86400 IN NS ns24.wixdns.com.
@ 86400 IN NS ns25.wixdns.com.

It also means that domain mydomain.com loses the ability to manage other (inferior) DNS records (A, MX, CNAME etc.) in our WebAdmin.
