System Insights is a new feature in the operating system Microsoft Windows Server 2019, that uses predictive analysis to forecast the resource usage. The fundamentals are information and data from the past, and System Insights can foresee even several weeks beforehand. It is one of the first deployment of the mashine learning in the operating system Microsoft.
Currently the System Insights can provide the information about these measurements:
- capacity of CPU,
- capacity of the network,
- complete forecast of occupied storage
- forecast of occupied Volume
Installation
Before you go to the installation, you should be wary, that the System Insights is a new feature and because the demands on the data processing – which may take a long time – the performance of the server can be affected.
The installation is fairly simple – you can install the System Insights from PowerShell (with the admin rights) with a command:
Install-WindowsFeature -Name System-Insights -IncludeManagementTools
or from the Windows Admin Center under the tab System Insights. We would recommend to use our guide for installing Windows Admin Center.
Usage
To display the forecast go to the Windows Admin Center on the tab System Insights.
Each followed metrics allows the detailed settings, when the data are to be generated for it. We would recommend to use e.g. early morning hour when the server is less loaded.
At the same time it is possible after some of the scenarios of the forecast (OK, Warning, Error, Critical, None) to call PowerShell scripts, that can do any action.
We would recommend to turn on the monitoring only for the metrics, that are important to you and only for necessary period.
