Transfer of data from a different provider

Transferring your website may be long process – it does not have to be difficult however, you follow the right steps. If you have decided to transfer your website to our hosting by yourself, we will tell you how to do that in this guide.

Website transfer includes these steps:

  • Transferring website files (FTP)
  • Transferring database (if it exists)
  • Transferring e-mails (if necessary)
  • Configuring the application on the new server
  • Changing DNS records on your domain

Transferring website files

There are multiple ways of transferring FTP data. Mostly used are:

  • Transfer by log in to FTP, copying data to PC and moving them to our FTP – how to log in and work with FTP can be found in our guide
  • Copying data via shell (console is available for any hosting)
  • Using our Migration tool – recommended for beginners (and advanced as well)

If you are using WordPress, we would recommend you to transfer your website by plugin Duplicator. Whole process is described in our guide. By this method you will migrate both your website and database in one go.

Transferring database

Transfer is made in these steps:

  • Export content of your database from your original hosting provider (usually to SQL file)
  • Create new database with us ( you can use this guide )
  • Import file to the database

OR you can use our Database Migrator instead

Most of the older versions MySQL or MariaDB are in most cases fully compatible with newer versions.

Transferring e-mails

If you do not have an option to export e-mails manually from your original provider, you can use our tool for migrating e-mails. It will allow you to duplicate your mailbox from external server to us. Follow our detailed guide for Email migrator.

After the transfer is complete, you can check your e-mails via our WebMail for example. If your mailbox contains all e-mails both sent and received, migration was successful. Structure of the directories should stay the same as well.

Configuring application

It is likely that after the transfer you will need to adjust the application settings for your application such as WordPress, Joomla, Drupal etc. for the new server. Change has to be done in the file that contains connection information for the database or eventually path to the files. Following guides will be of help:

After the configuration is complete, do not forget to test functionality of your website via change of hosts files. Test all sub-pages and administration.

Changing DNS records

If you tested functionality of your website, the very last step is change of DNS records. If you have requested the change of registrar (link) to us, you can edit DNS records in the WebAdmin.

If not, you can ask your your current registrar to change following values (nameservers): ns1.websupport.cz, ns2.websupport.cz a ns3.websupport.eu. The change of these values (nameservers) can take up to 24 hours before all internet servers are notified about this change.

Congratulations! Transfer to our hosting is completed.
